If you’ve been following along with me then you already know I just returned from Cancun, Mexico! I’m mentally still there and struggling to get myself back into a normal routine. I mean who wants to cook and clean after a week of being spoiled?! Admittedly, it is nice to sleep in my own bed and get back to real life.
Mexico is a place we love to visit and this was our fourth time vacationing there. In the past, we have stayed in the Riviera Maya, so this time we chose the new area of Playa Mujeres just 30 mins North of the Cancun airport. Our resort of choice was the all-inclusive Dreams Playa Mujeres Golf & Spa. All-inclusive is the way to go, all meals and alcoholic drinks included. The resort was brand new in December 2016 gotta love that! I know you want all the details good and bad, here’s a rundown below!
We had pre-arranged transportation to and from the airport through Amstar which is affiliated with the resort. We were greeted at the airport by a friendly representative who knew our name and escorted us to the van. We traveled approx. 40 mins and upon arrival we had Dreams staff ready to help us out with champagne in hand!
PREFERRED GUEST/CHECK IN
We booked our vacation as a preferred guest which means we have a separate building and area for check-in near the beach. We were escorted to our private area by a wonderful staff member who took care of organizing our luggage and providing us with a much-needed drink! Check in went smoothly and our room was available right away. However, we were not happy with the location of our room and quickly requested a different one. That evening we were moved to our desired suite. We had a view of the pools and the ocean yippee!!
As a preferred guest, you have your own lobby with a bar and finger foods served all day. The beach huts are also reserved for preferred guests along with your own beach bar. The lazy river at the resort is for preferred guests only. So, in high season this is a bonus. For us, the resort wasn’t overly busy and they weren’t too worried about who was using what pool/beach amenities.
A huge bonus – wifi is all around the resort, even on the beach! This was a first for us, at previous hotels wifi only worked in the buildings.
Okay, the pools were my favorite part of the resort! So many of them and two were infinity pools that overlooked the beach and ocean. Nothing better than lounging in the pool with a stunning view. The pools had various levels, shallow areas, beach-like entrances and of course places for lounge chairs with umbrellas in the water. The huts with the beds are also near the pool. Three swim-up bars are available with one under a waterfall.
The pool/infinity pool closest to the beach is the activity and party place where you will find music and fun.
The daily entertainment crew would instruct water aerobics, Zumba, water basketball, and games. There were a couple of days where a live band would play on the deck above the pool. Never a dull moment.
Every day we pool hopped from one to another. That’s what happens when you travel with a 6-year-old who likes to be entertained!
Important to note, there are lifeguards around keeping an eye on things. The pools are shallow enough for adults to stand in. I’m 5’4 and the deepest pool went up to my shoulders.
You can imagine how excited my daughter was to see the kids waterpark! Lots of slides, buckets dumping water and sprayers. We spent time there each day. For extra comfort, a lifeguard is always on duty and the water is quite shallow in the play area. There is also a pool connected that is deeper and swimmable.
On the opposite side of the kid’s area is the bigger slides for adults and kids to enjoy.
Close by is the lazy river. As I mentioned this is for preferred guests only. Most of the time it was just the three of us floating around. Very relaxing!
EXPLORERS CLUB/CORE ZONE
Explorers club is the kids club where your little ones age 3 – 12 can go for the day to enjoy activities and fun while parents get a break. They are open 10 am – 10 pm and offer arts & crafts, an outdoor smaller gated waterpark, playground, movie nights, indoor game room etc. Parents are given a beeper so if there are any issues you are contacted immediately. We didn’t use this service as we wanted to have our daughter with us and enjoy family time.
Core Zone is for teens 13-17 and they have a lot to enjoy: a bungee trampoline, rock wall, arcade, pools, kayak and bike tours, dance parties, bonfires etc.
For me, the beach is where I want to be. I love swimming in the ocean, walking the beach and just relaxing under a straw hut. This resort offers huts with beds and loungers with umbrellas in the sand. Oh and a bar at the beach of course. Sounds perfect right?! That part is fantastic, but my only real complaint is the actual ocean and shoreline is full of seaweed. The water isn’t clear and I didn’t really swim because of the grassy pieces all around. I have been to other areas of Mexico and the water is much nicer. So, if you are looking to enjoy the ocean water this isn’t the place for you.
As I mentioned, there is a bar on the beach and waitresses to serve you drinks while you lounge, but there is no food service.
I know you’re all wondering about the rooms. To be honest I was so obsessed with the outdoor beauty I didn’t get a photo of our room! The preferred club junior suite oceanview with King bed was wonderful with a gorgeous view of the ocean and resort.
The bathrooms had double sinks, marble counters, hairdryer and a rain shower.
What I really liked was the portable steamer! I used it every day for my dresses. You know how wrinkled they get from the suitcase, and the steamer was so much easier and quicker than a traditional iron! Now I need a portable one for home!
The fridge was fully stocked daily with waters, corona, and juice. My daughter loved the M&M’s and Pringles they provided each day. We used the espresso machine every morning. Caffeine, please!
Our balcony jacuzzi was always clean and a table, chairs, and couch were there to relax on.
The bed was fairly comfortable (a little firmer than I like but I’m picky) and extra pillows were in the closet.
Our room was cleaned daily and towels restocked. They also provided mosquito spray as there were some pesky ones that came out around 8 pm.
What impressed us was the iPad in the room. You can order room service, see daily activities, spa options, and excursion details.
Yes, food is important on vacation right?! You won’t be disappointed at this resort. Seven a la carte’s, a grill, buffet and an ice cream shop! Every a la carte restaurant offered the kids menu so no matter where we ate my daughter had choices she would eat. Kids menu – grilled cheese, spaghetti, chicken nuggets, hot dog, mac and cheese, etc you know the usual lol. No reservations are required for the a la carte restaurants except Fusion if you want the teppanyaki.
Every morning we ate at the World Cafe buffet and it was really tasty. I had an omelet made fresh each day. Lots of options, fresh fruit, waffles, pastries etc. A mimosa was a must! The buffet at lunch had the best burgers made fresh.
Fusion (Japanese) was our favorite. We sat around for teppanyaki and they put on a wonderful show. Not to mention the fresh seafood, chicken and beef were delicious. I was obsessed with their fried rice! We wanted to do the teppanyaki again but reservations went fast and they only have two grills.
The Mezes (Mediterranean) was very good. The appetizers are small so we ordered a few – fried crab, scallops and beet wrapped goat cheese.
Gaucho Grill (Brazilian steakhouse) was the one my hubby couldn’t wait to try. If you’ve never been to one it’s where the servers come around with several types of meat on a spear and you can slice off as much as you want. A buffet of salad and sides is offered with it. We were not disappointed. Delicious.
An extensive wine list was offered and we chose to spoil ourselves with a nice bottle of red (additional charge) Cheers!
Tres Colores (Mexican) was good but not a lot of options. I ordered the fajitas which were yummy and I especially enjoyed the tortillas! An iceberg drink (a corona poured in a glass with a margarita on top) is the perfect compliment!
That’s a Wrap was open all day (near the pools) and served pre-made healthy wraps, salads, and veggies. I’m obsessed with their tortillas as mentioned above so I ate these a lot lol.
Dolce was the ice cream shop that we visited every evening after dinner. I had the coconut flavor and it was heavenly! Strawberry was my daughters fave.
Tides is a poolside grill that offered all day nachos, burgers, hot dogs, pizza etc.
We didn’t dine at the other restaurants L’Etoile (French) or Maris (Seafood)
All the bars offer top-shelf liquor.
There was always something going on and we made sure to check daily! Other than the pool fun, they offered other activities. On our second day, there was a beach dance party and fire show at night! The DJ on the beach and performers kept us entertained.
Other nightly entertainment throughout the week included a casino night, live bands, magic show, and movies under the stars etc.
During the day we did a tequila tasting (that was a little rough since I hate tequila but when in Mexico…)
For all you golfers out there (my hubby) the golf course is beside the resort and looked like a beautiful place to play.
Another benefit to staying at Dreams is you have access to the Secrets resort right next door. Secrets is adults only and their pools, restaurants, and spa are available for use.
No need to travel if you want to swim with the dolphins! The Delphinus Playa Mujeres is within Dreams resort! They have an area blocked off in the ocean so all you have to do is walk down the beach to see them swimming!
My daughter and I decided we must swim with them. It was so easy to sign up and the staff was very informative and friendly. We did the splash package (max 10 people) that is basic but perfect for my young daughter. We were able to pet the dolphins while they swam around us and performed tricks. Because it was off season there was only a family of 3 with us so it still felt very personalized.
Delphinus has many other locations to check out if you’re heading to Mexico!
Other popular excursions I would recommend doing – Xcaret, Xel-Ha or Xplor are over an hour drive from the Dreams Playa Mujeres and can be booked at the resort.
Overall, we had such a wonderful vacation. The weather was hot and sunny every single day (hurricane/rainy season didn’t affect this area.) Dreams Playa Mujeres is family and couples friendly. We felt like there was something for everyone. Gorgeous views all week long!
Feel free to email, comment or message me if you have any questions about our experience or the resort!!
